For the first time in decades, law enforcement is returning to the Ohio River in a big way.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office and the Evansville Police Department have officially launched a new Joint River Patrol Unit, bringing a dedicated police presence back to the water for the first time in more than 25 years.

A New Patrol On The Ohio River

Meet Riverwolf

The patrol boat, named Riverwolf, honors Charlie Wolfinger (pictured above), a former Special Deputy known for his work on the river in the 1980s and early 1990s.

The vessel itself was funded in part through grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard Port Security partners. Additional support was provided by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to help cover staffing costs.

How The Unit Will Operate

The Joint River Patrol Unit will include about 18 personnel, split between the VCSO and EPD.

The team will maintain a visible presence on the water from Memorial Day through Labor Day, operating on weekends, holidays, and during special events.

Officers have already completed training with Indiana Conservation Officers and regional partners to prepare for boating enforcement and water-based operations.
