When I was a kid, I read and collected random comic books. I didn't have a large assortment of comics, but I did have one prized possession. I owned every single copy of the Captain Carrot & His Amazing Zoo Crew series. It was campy, fun and right up my Alley-Kat-Abra!

I still have that entire series. I haven't read it in a while, but I have all the issues stored in plastic to protect them. Captain Carrot is one of the pieces of my childhood that I made sure I preserved as an adult.

That's precisely when this news caught my attention. Saturday, May 4th, is Free Comic Book Day across the country and a shop right here in Owensboro is celebrating. Big Bang Toys Comics & Games has a full day of activities planned- including an appearance from a local comic creator.

Charlie has been writing comics since he was about 9-years-old. It was Captain Underpants that inspired him to create comics of his own. When he was 18, Charlie started reaching out online to find artists to collaborate with. He published his first series in 2019 and has been doing it since.

The Citizen is a comedy comic caper about one 'normal' guy living in a world of superheroes. Pistol Shrimp, his latest masterpiece, is an "under-the-sea western" about a gun-toting shrimp.

According to Charlie's wife, Whitney, "Pistol Shrimp is a larger-than-life character, although he's a only a few inches tall."
