Can You Name the First Country Song Ever Played on MTV?

This is mind-blowing to me. This week marks the 45th anniversary of the launch of MTV!  It was Saturday, August 1st, 1981 that MTV officially hit the airwaves. At 12:01am that morning, the brand new channel that revolutionized the music industry and television, aired its very first video.

Remember this? Here's a rewind to the first five minutes or so of the broadcast and the first video ever played on the network.

Here's a fun fact too. The first video played on MTV has been the long-standing answer to trivia night questions around the country. But here's a question for you. Do you know what the second video ever played on MTV was?

It was this!

Another fun fact. Pat Benatar had two of the first 50 videos played on MTV.  "I'm Gonna Follow You" was the 30th video aired on the network.

But here's something that will catch you by surprise all these years later. Did you know that one of the first 50 videos played on MTV was a country song?

Here! Let me give you a few clues.

The singer is a female. She released her very first country single in 1975 with a group she fronted. The group name included hers, by the way, and their debut song was called "Catwillow River." Does that help you out at all?

Okay. Another clue for you. She landed her first charting song on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978 with a song called "It's a Heartache." Any luck yet?

Then, here. Let me help you out some more. After charting six more country singles, including "Let's Keep It That Way" and "Sunshine", she released a song that would peak at #22 on the Billboard Country chart, #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart.

"Angel of the Morning" became the first song of four consecutive Juice Newton songs to break inside the Top 10. The others: "Queen of Hearts," "The Sweetest Thing (I've Never Known)," and "Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me."

Of course, "Angel of the Morning" also goes down in music history as the 41st video and the very first country music song to ever be played on MTV! So, as we take a look back at MTV's mind-blowing history, there's a piece of it you may not have known.
