When Three Dog Night Comes Back Around, So Do the Memories
In the fall of 1994, I landed in Owensboro, Kentucky, with a carry-on bag, a little bit of nerves, and one pretty big decision hanging in the air.
I had flown in from Michigan to see if this place, this new city I didn’t really know yet, could feel like home. The plan was simple. Visit, get a feel for it, and decide if I could picture myself working at WaxWorks and starting something new here.
As I was waiting for my flight back to Michigan, I noticed a little commotion off in the distance. So I wandered closer.
And there they were.
Three Dog Night!
Somebody even had a camera and snapped a photo of me with the band. Promised they’d get it to me later.
That photo? It never made it back to me. Somewhere out there, it still exists.

Turns out, I'm not the only one who remembers a Three Dog Night moment.
Chad shared something after I told my story, and it led to this really fun little connection back in time. He was young and was at the game. So he reached out to Kirk Kirkpatrick to see what he remembered from those days, and he sent this back:
"I do remember a softball tournament that included personalities from a rock group, which I did not remember as Three Dog Night, but that would certainly make sense. They were probably performing at the Executive Inn, and Hot 96 really did have a fun baseball team. I played on the WVJS Fighting Pumas softball team back in the mid-70s, but when Hot 96 came along, most of our team moved there."
Those memories came back the moment we saw the announcement today!
Three Dog Night is Coming Back
They’re stopping at the Old National Events Plaza on August 15th.
Tickets go on sale Friday, May 22nd at 10 AM.
It’s wild when you think about it. Six decades in, 21 straight Top 40 hits, three #1 songs, and a sound that basically became part of the fabric of American radio. They’re still out there doing it. Still singing, still touring, still sounding like themselves in the best possible way.
And I can’t help but wonder, does anyone else have a Three Dog Night memory tucked away somewhere?
