Fired Up About Homelessness in Indiana? Here’s How Evansville Can Actually Do Something About It
New Law In Indiana Causes A New Call To Action
You’ve probably seen the posts… people saying it’s now “legal to be homeless” in Indiana and of course, that’s got a lot of folks talking this week. Bobby looked at me and said you meant illegal right? Nope, I mean legal.
But here’s the truth that I found out, being homeless itself was actually never illegal. What’s really changing is how cities deal with things like public camping, where people can go, and what resources are available and of course each city is different. And maybe you're like me and you’re hearing this and thinking, “this is a problem”… and you’re not wrong.
Homelessness is everywhere in the world and right here in Evansville, hundreds of people are dealing with homelessness on any given night.
So here are some things you can actually do something about locally:
Start with organizations already doing the work:
Aurora, Inc.
They’re out on the front lines doing outreach, helping people find housing, and even assisting folks transitioning back into society. They take donations, supplies, and volunteers and they serve hundreds in our community every year.
Ozanam Family Shelter
This one hits different, they’re the only emergency shelter locally that keeps families together. You can donate money, everyday items, or your time.
Evansville Rescue Mission
Been around for over 100 years, providing meals, shelter, and long-term programs for people trying to rebuild their lives.
House of Bread and Peace
Focused on women and children, offering shelter and support to help them get back on their feet.
Dignity EVV
This is a really easy one—you can even text to donate. Funds go toward events that connect people with things like healthcare, job help, and housing resources all in one place.
And if you’re thinking, “I don’t have extra money to donate" Well, that's okay too because you can always donate things that you might not be using anymore.
Homeless Shelters are always looking for these items for some extra help.
- Socks
- Toiletries
- Cleaning supplies
- Bottled water
- Even just your time
Some shelters literally list things like toilet paper, diapers, and laundry detergent as constant needs. So even if you think the task is small in helping out with homeless shelters, the need goes a long way.
