Don't Panic If Your Water Looks Different in Evansville This Week
Evansville crews are beginning work across the city that could temporarily change the way your tap water looks.
If you turn on the faucet in Evansville over the next couple of weeks and your water looks a little different, don't immediately assume something is wrong with your plumbing.
The Evansville Water and Sewer Utility is beginning its routine fire hydrant flushing program Monday, August 24, and crews will continue working throughout the city through Friday, September 4. ([EWSU]
Why Is Evansville Flushing Fire Hydrants?
All of this came to light when Bobby and I were heading to the gym today and I saw a hire hydrant with water running out of it. I realized by learning that it's more than just opening hydrants and letting water run down the street.
The routine maintenance helps keep the city's water distribution system working properly, maintains water quality and makes sure hydrants are ready to go when firefighters need them.
As crews work their way through the system, residents may temporarily notice changes in their water, including discoloration caused by sediment being stirred up in the pipes.
So if you happen to spot crews flushing a hydrant in your neighborhood, or notice something looks a little different when you turn on the faucet, there's a good chance the two are connected.
How Long Will It Last?
The flushing program is scheduled to continue through September 4, so Evansville residents could see crews working in different neighborhoods over the next couple of weeks.
