The Man Behind Garfield Is Celebrating His Birthday, And He Has a Big Indiana Connection
Indiana’s Own Jim Davis, The Creator of Garfield, Is Celebrating His Birthday Today
It might not be as common now as it was back in the day, but there was a time when we all had a newspaper delivered by a paperboy, and that was how you found out what was happening around you.
You would hold that newspaper in your hands and read the latest crime stories in your town, find out who just got married, check out job openings, catch up on sports updates, and then there was the one iconic section that made you take a break from reality for a minute and just smile. The comics.
There was something special about looking at those little pictures and getting a good laugh before starting your day.
If you grew up reading the comics in the newspaper, watched Saturday morning cartoons, or you just appreciate a good lazy Sunday morning with a cup of coffee, chances are you know Garfield.
The orange cat who hates Mondays, loves lasagna, and somehow perfectly captures the attitude many of us have before our first cup of coffee has been making people laugh for nearly 50 years.
And I found out today that the person behind Garfield has a pretty cool Indiana connection.
Jim Davis is the creator of the Garfield comic strip, and today, July 28th, is his birthday. Jim is now known as one of the most recognizable cartoonists in the world, and he is an Indiana native.
Bobby and I were talking about Jim today, and Bobby told me he used to live near where Jim grew up. In the 80s, he would drive by Jim’s house, which I thought was pretty cool. It’s always fun finding those little connections to famous people who came from right here in Indiana.
From an Indiana Farm to Worldwide Fame
Jim Davis was born in Marion, Indiana, and grew up on a farm near Fairmount. Growing up surrounded by animals, especially cats, played a huge role in shaping the character that would eventually become Garfield.
In fact, Davis grew up with around 25 cats on his family’s farm. Those experiences helped him understand the funny, independent, and sometimes completely ridiculous personalities that cats can have.
Now, as a cat owner myself, I can say Jim really nailed Garfield’s personality. A chunky orange cat who is adorable but also acts like he owns the house, expects everyone to cater to him, and somehow gets away with everything? That’s pretty spot on. My cats have a lot of Garfield energy too.
And while those cats helped inspire the character, Garfield was not named after one of them. Jim Davis actually named Garfield after his grandfather, James Garfield Davis. He described his grandfather as someone who had a big personality and a stubborn but lovable attitude, which honestly fits the famous orange cat pretty well.
Garfield Almost Didn’t Happen
Before Garfield became a household name, Davis created another comic strip called Gnorm Gnat. It featured a group of insects, but it never really took off.
While trying to get his work published, Davis noticed something important. Many successful comic strips featured dogs, but there weren’t many famous comic cats.
So, he decided to create a cat that people could connect with.
That idea turned into Garfield, who made his comic strip debut on June 19, 1978.
At the time, Garfield appeared in only 41 newspapers. Today, Garfield is one of the most recognizable cartoon characters in the world.
The Garfield We Know and Love
Garfield isn’t exactly the typical superhero type. He’s not saving the world or fighting villains. He’s just a cat who loves food, hates Mondays, enjoys sleeping, and has a talent for sarcasm.
Basically, Garfield is all of us after a long day.
Jim Davis has said Garfield represents a lot of human traits. Even though he is a cat, people relate to him because he enjoys the simple things in life, like relaxing, eating good food, and avoiding things he doesn’t want to do.
And yes, Garfield’s famous love of lasagna was inspired by Davis’ own appreciation for food.
An Indiana Connection We Can Be Proud Of
For those of us here in Indiana, there’s something pretty special about knowing one of the world’s most famous cartoonists got his start right here.
Jim Davis studied art at Ball State University and has continued to have strong ties to Indiana throughout his career.
He took a simple idea, a lazy orange cat with a big personality, and turned it into a worldwide phenomenon that has been translated into languages around the globe, inspired TV shows and movies, and become a huge part of pop culture.
