Jordan Walker Makes Cardinals History with Thrilling Home Run Derby Victory
As a lifelong Cardinals fan, I have to admit it feels great to write this article. History was made last night and just in case you missed it, I'll tell you. Jordan Walker.
Jordan Walker didn't just win the 2026 MLB Home Run Derby. He did it in dramatic fashion, in front of a sold-out Citizens Bank Park crowd that was overwhelmingly cheering for hometown favorite Kyle Schwarber. By the end of the night, Walker had silenced the boos, made franchise history, and gave Cardinals fans a moment we'll be talking about for years.
A Historic First for St. Louis
I honestly didn't believe this myself, but it's true. Despite all of the legendary sluggers who have worn the Birds on the Bat, no Cardinals player had ever won the Home Run Derby.
Not Mark McGwire.
Not Albert Pujols.
Not Jim Edmonds.
Jordan Walker is now the first player in franchise history to take home the Home Run Derby trophy. It's an accomplishment that had eluded every Cardinals great before him.
A Derby for the Ages
Walker came out swinging from the very beginning. He hit 13 home runs in the opening round to advance to the semifinals, where he knocked off Tampa Bay's Junior Caminero to earn a spot in the championship round against Schwarber.
With the hometown crowd behind Schwarber, the Phillies slugger put together a strong final round with 11 home runs. It looked like the trophy was staying in Philadelphia.
Not if Walker had anything to say about it.
Using the Home Run Derby's new swing-based format to his advantage, Walker caught fire when it mattered most. Trailing late in the round, he crushed six consecutive home runs, including the game-winning blast on his final swings to complete an incredible 12-11 comeback victory. The dramatic finish instantly became one of the most memorable in Home Run Derby history.
Embracing the Villain Role
Philadelphia fans made it clear who they were rooting for, showering Walker with boos throughout the finals.
Instead of letting the atmosphere rattle him, Walker embraced it.
After accepting the trophy, he joked that hearing the boos felt pretty good, a fitting response after spoiling the hometown celebration and leaving Philadelphia with the Derby crown.
A Star Is Emerging
The victory capped off what has already been a breakout season for the 24-year-old outfielder. After working to simplify his swing and unlock the power that made him one of baseball's top prospects, Walker earned his first All-Star selection and now has a Home Run Derby title to add to his growing résumé.
As a Cardinals fan, this one just felt different.
Seeing Jordan Walker accomplish something that even Hall of Famers and franchise legends never could is a reminder that this young star may just be getting started. Monday night's Derby wasn't just another All-Star event. It was a historic night for Cardinals baseball.
