It is hard to lose a friend. For many of us in Owensboro we learned just how hard that is when we lost Jeff Wahler a few weeks ago. Jeff was a good father, trusted friend, and a great musician. As a member of the legendary Velvet Bombers, Jeff helped entertain hundreds of thousands of people. His talent and ability was incredible.

Jeff loved music. That love, and his willingness to share it with others, lead him to round up his buddies from time to time and go the the Boy's and Girl's club and give music lessons to the kids. No charge, he just wanted to encourage creativity.

In his memory his family and friends have created a music scholarship fund to provide instruments for kids who want to take music lessons but can't afford it.

The Jeff Wahler Music Scholarship Program for underprivileged children is now a reality.  While cash donations are readily accepted organizers are also collecting musical instruments. They need Guitars, flutes, saxes, clarinets, trumpets, violins etc.

If you have an instrument not currently being used please consider donating it to this program. An instrument is meant to be played and your donation will fill some child's dream of being able to create music, just like Jeff did.

To donate an instrument just bring it by the Owensboro Music Center at 1303 Breckinridge St. in Owensboro. For pickup call:

Kaye Wahler-Hall              926-8232

Barry or Paula Wahler      685-1643

Mary Beth Harrington      485-2491

There will also be a Silent Auction at the Final Friday After 5 for 2011 on Sept. 2. That night the Velvet Bombers will take the stage for the first time since losing their wingman and brother. The auction will feature donated items with all proceeds going to the Jeff Wahler Music Scholarship fund.

If you ever enjoyed an evening with the Velvet Bombers you are encouraged to give back a bit the joy that Jeff and the boys gave you by either donating an instrument, cash or buying something at the silent auction Sept. 2.

Jeff is no longer with us in person but his spirit and love of life and music will always be remembered through this Music Scholarship.
