Mall Memories – See Inside Eastland Mall Evansville, IN Then and Now [Pics]
Generations of Memories
How cool would it be to have a ton of photos from the '80s like we have of literally everything today? Andy Froehle tells me that these photographs were taken by his Uncle Jim Froehle. Andy is going through a lot of his vintage photos and sharing them in the Facebook Group I Grew Up In Evansville, IN.

A Walk Through Time in Eastland Mall
We talk about Washington Square Mall a lot, and how it is now on the Dead Mall list. I thought it would be neat to compare some of these photos from 1981 to the ones that I took this week, just to see the differences.
What Was Your Favorite Store?
At Eastland Mall, it would have been KB Toys. At Washington Square, it would have been Sears.
If it is the early 1980's my new wife and I were headed to Lazarus to shop for new furniture and to have lunch in the cafe at Lazarus. Their Broccoli Cheddar soup and chocolate chunk cookies were the best in town.
Disc Jockey then off to Kaybee toy store. Then to spend the rest of the time in the Disney Store.
Oh, man! Spencer’s was hilarious to me when I was a teen! The cards in the back… One, in particular, said “Let the Good times Roll” and I’ll leave it up to your imagination as to what the front of the card had on it
It’s a Small World!! Then Orange Julius!
County Seat. Need a God Awful sweater with matching socks that live on forever as my 8th-grade school photo AND my family’s Olon Mills pics.
Then and Now - See Inside Evansville, Indiana's Eastland Mall
Eastland Mall opened in 1981, and it has changed a lot through the years. JC. Penny still anchors the mall on one end, and what was Lazarus Department Store is now Macy's.
Then & Now - Evansville's Washington Square Mall Through the Years
Evansville is home to a lot of unique buildings including the first enclosed retail shopping center in Indiana. Yes, our very own Washington Square Mall was the place to be when it opened in 1963. If you walk through the mall today, you would never guess how alive the shops were, even through the 1980s. Enjoy this walk down memory lane I've put together, and maybe someday there will be new life inside 5011 Washington Ave.
