The MLB and it's players agreed to implement a rule limiting collisions at the plate without taking it out of the game completely.  New rule 7.13, which will begin as a one-year experiment, will allow collisions if the catcher or other player covering home plate is in possession of the ball and is blocking the base runner's direct path to the plate, and if the catcher goes into the basepath to field a throw to the plate.  the rule states "a runner attempting to score may not deviate from his direct pathway to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher or other player covering home plate."  Violation of the new rule will lead to the runner being called out, even if the catcher drops the ball.
