STUDENTS-IPADS

Newport school district to get students' iPads

(Will be updated.)

NEWPORT, Ky. (AP) — The Newport Independent School District plans to equip every high school student with an iPad.

According to The Kentucky Enquirer, the district paid $400 each for 470 iPads using a mix of state and district money, and the devices are expected to be distributed starting in November.

Adopting devices such as iPads, smartphones and laptops as academic tools is an ongoing, if slow, trend among school districts throughout the country.

At Newport High School, teachers already have iPads and have been using them to plan curriculum.

School officials believe the iPads are worth the investment because they expect them to help improve academics, especially at a high school currently under state intervention because of low test scores.

BLACKBERRY GUM

Company packs medicinal use of blackberries in gum

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A company in Lexington has found a way to put the medicinal use of blackberries into gum.

Paige Shumate Short is the owner of the Four Tigers berry care company.

According to The Kentucky Enquirer, one day Short was passing a television in her den and saw a report about University of Kentucky researchers working with black raspberries. She thought: Why not blackberries? Her late father grew them on his farm.

Short eventually connected with her now business partner, Russell Mumper, the vice dean of the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy.

Since June, Short's company has begun stocking its debut product, gums — BerryCare Toothpaste Gum and BerryCare's Quick Energy Gum — at regional Kroger stores.
