National Night Out Begins Tonight

Last year National Night Out was a big deal as the late Joe Lowe wrote on 1490womi.com. But, so far I haven't heard of any Owensboro participation this year. And, this year is the 30th anniversary of National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime,” and neighborhood watch groups throughout the nation will mingle with police officers, city council members, and fire and EMS personnel to reinforce community partnerships and prevent crime.

The National Night Out program was established by the National Association of Town Watch to increase crime prevention awareness, strengthen police-community partnerships, generate participation in anti-crime programs and make it clear to criminals that neighborhoods are fighting against crime.

Last year, 37.5 million people in 15,704 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, military bases and Canadian cities participated in National Night Out, and this year is expected to be even bigger.
