I love Halloween and I love watching scary movies, even the bad ones. Love is a strong word to describe the two I watched over the weekend. I thought of something, which type of fright do you look for in a scary movie? Scares or creepiness? The first one up is without a doubt creepy, but not for the reason you might think.

The Witch

This film debuted at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and it was released in theaters this past February. It is set in 17th century New England; a family is forced out of their Puritan colony, though it's not explicitly spelled out why. They establish new roots near a huge forest, but they soon struggle to survive, and their infant son suddenly disappears. I file this one under "creepy" and it's a well-made film. The director, Robert Eggers, used all natural light indoors and outdoors. The interior scenes are only lit by candles. The dialogue is also authentic to the time period which makes it difficult to understand the actors almost all the way through. Scary, no, creepy yes. The Witch is available to stream via Amazon Prime.

Ouija: Origin of Evil

Ouija: Origin of Evil just hit theaters a week ago. If you are keeping count, this is the fifth movie with Ouija as or part of the title to be released. Origin of Evil is a prequel to 2014's Ouija, confused yet? I had a lot of good times with my friends growing up and playing with the otherwise normal Milton Bradley board game. I think there's still one under a couch at my parents' house. As with any run of the mill horror film, there a lot of good jump out of your seat moments and some creepy effects, but is it scary? Kind of. I would call it more of a "popcorn" movie.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
