It was a bit muddy after the much need rain last night but that didnt stop over 200 people from gathering on the new Soapbox Derby track at Ben Hawes Park Friday Morning. It is sponsored by the Owensboro Lions Club

The weekend the track will see some 100 racers from the region competing for a chance to go to Akron Ohio for the championship race.

Kirk Kirkpatrick was emcee and introduced the crowd to Terry Woodward who competed in the Derby in his youth. Kirk also introduced tomorrows leaders. The local kids who will be racing this weekend.

The 900 foot asphalt is just the first part of what Lions Club President Dan Morgan says will be a long term project with a building at the top of the hill, judging stand and others additions being made in the future.

The first race will begin Saturday morning at 8am. Part of the proceeds of the weekend's activities will go to breast cancer awareness. This in memory of a Lion's Club member who lost her race with cancer earlier this year.

After a few quick comments from Mayor Ron Payne and Daviess Co. Judge Executive Al Mattingly it was time for the ribbon cutting. This one a bit different from others at young Kelsey Settle dover her Pink Ribbon Susan G. Komen for the cure car down the track cutting the pink ribbon at the finish line.

I have included photos as well as some audio of today's ribbon cutting for all to see and hear.

Good luck this weekend to all participants and their families.
