You could say that hockey players give blood all the time, but this time is different.

When a player for the Evansville Thunderbolts gives blood it's usually during a game and not done intentionally. Hockey is obviously an extremely physical sport where players are slamming into each other, smashing one another into the boards, and crashing onto the ice. And, from what I understand, every once in a while, tempers flare, gloves come off, fists meet faces, and noses get busted. That's a joke, of course, but what isn't a joke is the Red Cross's urgent need for blood donations which is why they've teamed up with the Thunderbolts to host a blood drive at the Ford Center this Saturday.

The blood drive will happen from Noon until 6:00 PM on Saturday, March 12th (2023) in the Hospitality Room inside the Ford Center. The entrance of which is located to the right of the box office windows.

Appointments are strongly encouraged and can be made using the sponsor code THUNDERBOLTS through Red Cross Blood.org, or by calling the Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS. You can also book through the Red Cross Blood Donor app which also allows you to speed up the donating process a bit by letting you answer the questions the blood technician would normally ask while checking your vitals in advance.

Side Note: Another cool feature of the app is that it shows you where your donation ends up after you give. For example, the last time I donated earlier this year, my blood ended up helping people in Columbia, Missouri, and St. Louis.

When you donate, not only will you be saving lives, but you'll also receive a $10 prepaid Visa gift card in the mail, and will be in the running to win a $3,000 prepaid Visa gift card.

And be sure to head back to the Ford Center Saturday evening after you donate to see the Thunderbolts host the Vermillion County Bobcats for Heart Health Night where a portion of the ticket sales will go back to the American Red Cross.
