Every American should take note of a very special day created by unanimous resolution in the U.S. Senate. Please continue to read this post and determine how best you and your family can participate in this long overdue but much needed event. On March 7th, 2011, the U.S. Senate declared March 30th as "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day," agreeing unanimously to a resolution introduced by Senator Richard Burr (R-N.C.), of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs. "I'm pleased that the Senate has agreed to set aside a day to give our Vietnam veterans a warm, long-overdue welcome home. I strongly encourage communities across the country to observe this day with activities and events that honor these veterans for their service. It's time they receive the recognition they have earned and deserve. This day also provides our nation with an important teaching moment. Never again should our men and women serving in the armed forces receive the same treatment as those returning from Vietnam," said Senator Richard Burr.

This March 30th, the Senate has encouraged Americans across the country to recognize Vietnam veterans for their sacrifice and demonstrate a warm welcome to these soldiers who returned from war to a politically divided country. And, the city of Owensboro will be one of many cities across the country welcoming them home.

The Daviess County Veterans Affairs Organization, along with representatives from all Veterans Posts here in Daviess County will be having a “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans” celebration on March 30th from 3pm – 6pm at the VA Clinic located at 3400 New Hartford Road.

The Festivities will begin at 3pm with the American Legion Post 9 Riders proudly bringing in a welcome banner; thereafter, the posting of colors by VFW Post 696 Color Guard. Daviess County Sheriff, and Vietnam Veteran, Keith Cain will “Welcome” attendees and Mayor Pro-Tem Pamela Smith-Wright will perform the singing of our National Anthem.

Representatives from all local Veteran Associations will be in attendance to help provide any Veteran with answers to questions they may have in regards to various Veteran issues. Veterans are asked to bring their DD 214 or any other discharge papers to gain information on benefits they may be entitled to.

Food will be provided, as well as a special gift for Vietnam Veterans in attendance. The Daviess County Veterans Affairs Organization is asking for the community to come out and support this special event and give our Vietnam Veterans the “Welcome Home” they deserved back in 1973.

I for one will be in attendance to applaude these heros and let them know their service was and is forever appreciated. I invite you and your family to join me.
