Yes, Daddy Longlegs are Harmless, But They Have a Creepy Habit [VIDEO]

Do y'all want any spiders? Seriously, I'm giving them away, because we have plenty out at the house and there's only so much room.

Yes, I'm being facetious, but we seem to have cornered the arachnid market out at our place. We have your wolf spiders, your jumping spiders, your crab spiders, and, YES, we discovered our first brown recluse just a couple of days ago.

And, YES, something will need to be done about THAT.

We also have more daddy longlegs--or harvestman spiders--than you can shake a stick at. Great big ones with fat bodies, as a matter of fact, and they love hanging out in the carport. In fact, they not only love hanging out, but they also love hanging out with EACH OTHER.

I have seen plenty of daddy longlegs in my time, but I have never seen them do this. But, then again, I haven't seen this many in one place at a time before.

Oh, before I go on, harvestmen aren't even spiders, just arachnids. But they creep people out enough that they are usually in danger of getting squashed. But if they're harmless, I don't care if they hang out over the back door.

And they ARE harmless. I've always heard that these daddy longlegs are the most venomous spiders on Earth, but Owlcation.com shoots that old wives' tale down. Harvestmen don't even have venom glands, so that makes it pretty tough for them to be even remotely dangerous.

They'll just have to settle for being pretty creepy. When you brush up against a harvestman cluster--like I did the other night--they disperse, and they do it quickly. Harmless or not, it's initially very off-putting. Now, we haven't seen any clusters like THIS in the carport, but it's an excellent example of what I'm describing, but to a larger degree:

All these spiders are like a whole new world for me. When I was living in the city limits of Owensboro, I just didn't see them in these large numbers, but out in the county, it's been a whole other story...kind of an adventure.

Except for that brown recluse part. That's not MY type of adventure.
