Due to construction in downtown Owensboro, big trucks are now forced to go somewhere other than downtown. The ban on the Heavy trucks begins today June 20, 2011. In a Media Release City Engineer Joe Schepers outlines the changes.

Heavy truck traffic is prohibited on Second Street from Triplett Street to Frederica Street beginning  Monday, June 20 and will remain prohibited until further notice due to construction at Riverfront Crossing.  Local deliveries and service for downtown business will be allowed during this time.  Truck traffic (any vehicle equipped with three (3) or more axles or having in excess of forty thousand (40,000) pounds gross weight) using Second Street from Triplett Street to Frederica Street, but not making deliveries to downtown business or trucks using this route for interstate or intrastate transportation within the corporate limits of Owensboro will not be allowed.  This traffic restriction will be strictly enforced by the Owensboro Police Department. For restricted vehicles:  Westbound through truck traffic will be diverted to Fifth Street via Triplett Street and then north on Frederica Street to Second Street westbound.  Please use caution and attention while driving in this area.  As always, the City of Owensboro apologizes for any inconvenience while crews are busy improving Owensboro’s downtown.
