Black cats have a bad reputation when it comes to luck. If we see one cross our path, it's supposed to mean bad luck. And, if a black cat is under a ladder and you are climbing it...no, that's not it. Well, it's all pretty ridiculous anyway. The whole bad luck and black cat connection is just insane.

About eight years ago, I adopted a black cat from the VHS. Her name is Emmy, and although she is emo and moody, she is just as loving and needy as any other cat. As, for luck, Emmy has brought us nothing but good luck.

When did black cats become known for bringing bad luck?

According to the Animal Welfare League NSW,

Throughout history, black cats have been afflicted with superstitious beliefs and folklore. During the Medieval Period (500 AD to 1500 AD) negative superstitions took hold with black cats becoming associated with the devil in significant parts of Europe.

I guess we brought our European attitude towards black cats when our ancestors immigrated to America. And, unfortunately, it stuck.

Are black cats considered lucky or unlucky in other parts of the world?

You might be surprised at what I learned when it comes to luck and black cats from fourpaws.com

In fact, they're considered good luck in many cultures. In Scotland, it's lucky for a strange black cat to arrive at your doorstep. In Japan, black cats are thought to help single women find suitors. There are a lot of silly superstitions out there, but most of the world acknowledges black cats as cute—not creepy.

Looks like the Trisate loves black cats. Hopefully, they will not continue to be overlooked at area shelters. I'm glad we are finally realizing that no pet, cat or dog, whatever color, is ever the reason we have bad luck. Never.

I'm so happy that my Emmy Lou is now recognized as a cat that brings good luck and not bad. If you are looking to make a cat a part of your family, take it from black cat owners, black cats are where it's at.
