Family Vacation Destination

I know in the midwest we like to vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico, in fact, John Mellencamp has the line in his song 'Pink Houses' that says "Go to work in some high rise, and vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico."   It's a popular destination for many who want to see a beautiful, white sandy beach, and not go too terribly far.  I meant it's about an 8-9 hour drive, but in the grand scheme of things, that's not a terrible drive for a beautiful ocean view (here's our beach house view).

In fact, just a couple of weeks ago my family loaded up a few cars and rented a beach house in Fort Morgan, Alabama which is just outside of Gulf Shores.  We love it down there because it's a fairly easy drive (just kinda long), and it's just beautiful.  It was also my kiddo's first time at the beach, so we stuck mostly to the beach under the umbrella, getting into shallow water occasionally.

Shark Video Goes Viral

Just a couple of weeks after we returned from the Gulf Shores area this video posted to Facebook went viral. The video was recorded on July 3, 2022 and it shows dozens of sharks. It's super eerie because you can see unsuspecting beach-goers just a short distance from the sharks.

This is footage from a guy flying a Drone next to us. This is our group “about 20/family” in the video. We didn’t see this until that evening when he shared the video with us.

Sharks in the water

Now I know you may be thinking, "duh Melissa, sharks live in the ocean"  and you're exactly right! It's important to remember when you're enjoying the beach, you're enjoying the sea creatures' home, and you should absolutely proceed with caution, and of course respect for the beach and ocean.  I thought this video was a good reminder to practice beach safety when you head out to the beach this summer. LOOK: Here are the 50 best beach towns in America

Every beach town has its share of pluses and minuses, which got us thinking about what makes a beach town the best one to live in. To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.

Keep reading to see if your favorite beach town made the cut.
