What is microchipping?

When you get your pet microchipped that means you have a small microchip inserted under the skin of your pet's neck.  The chip is about the size of a grain of rice, and the chip makes sure your information is on your pet at all times. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, the chip is injected under the skin with a needle and hurts no more than a regular injection.

The AVMA explains how  microchips help reunite owners with lost pets:

When an animal is found and taken to a shelter or veterinary clinic, one of the first things they do is scan the animal for a microchip. If they find a microchip, and if the microchip registry has accurate information, they can quickly find the animal's owner.

The AVMA says that studies have shown that animals who are microchipped have an easier time reuniting with their owners.  In fact, in a study, they found that microchipped stray dogs were returned to their owners more than double the overall rate for stray dogs, and for stray cats, the return rate was even higher.
