There's a really unique event taking place in downtown Owensboro this Saturday. Habitat for Humanity Owensboro-Daviess County is hosting a brand new, exciting fundraising event. It's called Habitat for Humanity's Quarter Mile. Here's how it works.

You're asked to bring your quarters to downtown Owensboro on Saturday, August 27th.

The goal is to collect enough quarters to stretch for one mile. Those quarters will lay end-to-end, along Veterans Boulevard. If they are able to create a mile of them, that will generate $15,000 is revenue for Habitat.

Proceeds raised will be used to build homes for Habitat clients who live here in Daviess County, Kentucky.

As you may know, Habitat for Humanity's vision is a "world where everyone has a decent place to live." Habitat here in Daviess County assists with that goal by working with local families and individuals who apply for home ownership through the agency. The selection committee focuses on three basic criteria:

  • The applicant’s level of need.
  • Their willingness to partner with Habitat.
  • Their ability to repay a mortgage through an affordable payment plan.

Also, a key feature of the program is "sweat equity". Habitat homeowners are expected to invest hundreds of hours of labor to work alongside volunteers and other Habitat homeowners to build their own home and others.

Of course, local funding is necessary to facilitate Habitat's mission to build homes for qualified applicants and this week's Quarter Mile is going to help support the cause.

If you have quarters you can donate, join Habitat for Humanity downtown on Saturday.  If you have quarters to donate, but you can't join the fun this weekend, you can drop your quarters off in advance at at the Habitat for Humanity office at 2930 West Fourth Street.

Your donated quarters will be built into the Quarter Mile on Saturday.

By the way, on Saturday, Veterans Boulevard will be closed between Daviess and Frederica Streets from 10am to 2pm. In addition to the Quarter Mile, there will also be free hotdogs, face paintings, balloons, games and other items at the event to celebrate Habitat's continuing legacy here in Daviess County.
