As I mentioned in a previous entry, the holiday's provide a double-edged sword for the Southwestern Indiana Chapter of the American Red Cross. On one hand the demand for blood is at one of its highest points of the year, while on the other hand, supply is low as the hustle and bustle of the holiday season prevents people from finding time to donate.

In an effort to increase supply during this critical time of the year, the Red Cross is hosting the "Give Thanks, Give Life" Blood Drive on Wednesday, November 21st from 6am-9pm at their headquarters on the corner of the Lloyd and Stockwell. To participate, simply stop by during those hours and make your donation or setup an appointment in advance by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visiting redcrossblood.org. Everyone who participates will receive a free pie and be in the running to win a $1,000 Visa gift card!

It's win-win for everybody! The Red Cross gets the blood it needs to help save the lives of others, and you get the chance at some extra holiday spending cash. And did I mention "free pie"?!?!

According to a press release from the Red Cross, all blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients, and a blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in in order to donate. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
