Indiana Travel Status Levels Explained And What They Mean
When winter weather hits, travel conditions can change quickly. In Indiana, local officials use a color-coded travel status system to communicate how safe it is to be on the roads.
The Warrick County Emergency Management Agency recently shared a breakdown of what each travel status means and what residents should do when conditions deteriorate.
What Is Indiana Travel Status
Indiana counties can issue one of four travel statuses during hazardous weather or emergency situations. These designations help residents understand when it is safe to travel and when staying off the roads is strongly recommended or required.

Normal Travel Status (Green)
A Normal Travel Status means there are currently no travel restrictions within the county. Roads may still be wet or slick in spots, but travel is generally considered safe.
Drivers should continue using normal caution, especially during winter conditions.
Travel Advisory (Yellow)
A Travel Advisory indicates that routine travel or activities may be restricted due to hazardous situations such as snow, ice, or reduced visibility.
Residents are encouraged to use caution and avoid travelling in areas affected by the advisory whenever possible.
Travel Watch (Orange)
A Travel Watch means conditions are threatening to public safety. Only essential travel is recommended, such as driving to work, medical appointments, or emergencies.
During a Travel Watch, businesses, schools, and government agencies are encouraged to implement emergency action plans.
Travel Warning (Red)
A Travel Warning is the most serious designation. Travel may be restricted to emergency management and public safety workers only.
Residents should refrain from all travel, comply with emergency measures, and cooperate fully with public officials. Law enforcement may actively restrict road access during a Travel Warning.
Where To Find Indiana Travel Status Information
Indiana residents can monitor current travel statuses by county through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.
The official Indiana Travel Advisory Map is available online and updated as conditions change. Residents are encouraged to check the map before heading out during winter storms.
Understanding travel statuses and following guidance from local officials helps keep everyone safer when winter weather impacts the region.
