Snack Recall: Ritz Crackers Pose Peanut Allergy Threat
A manufacturing error that could be "life-threatening" has led to a massive recall of a popular snack sold nationwide at grocery chains and retailers, including Walmart and Target.
Why Ritz Crackers Are Being Recalled
Mondelēz Global LLC has announced a recall of several types of Ritz sandwich crackers after it was discovered that some of the packages may be labeled as cheese but actually contain peanut butter - an incredibly dangerous mixup for those with peanut allergies.
According to the recall shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the products were sold in 8-pack, 20-pack, and 40-pack cartons. While the outer carton is marked with an allergen warning indicating that the products "contain peanuts," the individual packages are where there is cause for alarm.

How the Labeling Mixup Happened
Mondelēz Global LLC claims the packaging rolls containing the film used to wrap peanut butter sandwich crackers may be defective, citing "supplier error" as the cause. They say that the recall only applies to 8-pack, 20-pack, and 40-pack RITZ Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwich cartons and the 20-pack RITZ Filled Cracker Sandwich Variety Pack cartons.

What to Do If You Bought Them
At this time, there have been no adverse reactions reported, and the recall is being issued out of an abundance of caution. Consumers who have a peanut allergy should not eat these products and are directed to throw them away. Those with questions regarding the recall can contact the company by calling 1-844-366-1171.
