Good Boy Alert! Meet Kentucky’s New Official State Dog
You know how states have official birds and flowers and things like that? For example, we all know Kentucky's state bird is the Cardinal, and the flower is the...? Goldenrod, good job! Did you know the Corvette is our state car? Our official drink may surprise you, though, so keep scrolling for a full list of symbols of Kentucky.
American Kennel Club Announcement
The American Kennel Club shared some fun news yesterday. The state of Kentucky has named an official state dog via SB 37 26KYGA presented by Senator Robin Webb of KY District 18! The Treeing Walker Coonhound was chosen to represent the Bluegrass for many reasons.

The Kentucky Town With a Coonhound Mayor
This is the definition of "on brand" as far as I'm concerned. In fact, there is a town in Kentucky with a Hound for a Mayor! Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, has elected a dog to serve since 1998, and Boone the Coonhound is currently in office. You can read more about that here.

Treeing Walker Coonhound Official State Dog of Kentucky
The AKC describes the Treeing Walker Coonhound as "'The People’s Choice.' There are many different coonhound breeds, but the Treeing Walker has been referred to as “the people’s choice” among coonhounds. Many hunters think these dogs are the best for competitions because they are more “hot-nosed,” meaning they will abandon an older scent trail for a fresher one, resulting in more catches."

The "Treeing" part of their names comes from the fact that they can't climb a tree, but they sure will try! They'll chase a critter up a tree to give their hunter a better chance of spotting them. Bred to hunt for raccoons, they will also go for bigger animals like bobcats or bears. They also have a VERY loud, distinctive bark.

Treeing Walker Coonhounds Are Kentucky Heritage Dogs
As long as you aren't a raccoon, they are generally very friendly and loving. Great with kids and typically other dogs, they are super smart and loyal. Look how sweet!

Cole Vanover of Lost Heritage Hounds brought his dog, Nate, to the signing to represent. How sweet! I just LOVE his message about why this recognition is particularly special. These coonhounds have been a part of Kentucky history since the very beginning.
