Why One Kentucky City Is Known as the Batter Capital of the World

In a recent discussion about favorite foods, we were all ticking off our top five, and spaghetti was and is the champ for me. Always. But biscuits and gravy come in as a close second, and it's because of the gravy.  In fact, there are times when I crave biscuits just so I can have gravy. Yes, I love gravy, but I'm not going to sit down with a spoon and eat it like soup.

And, of course, I can run to the store and grab a can of biscuits to satisfy that craving, but there's nothing like ordering them at specific restaurants that go the extra mile with the breakfast classic. For me, Owensboro's Windy Hollow Biscuit House wins the day in this category. As for national chains, I'll go with Cracker Barrel and McDonald's.

The Batter Capital of the World

Now, did you know that every McDonald's biscuit east of the Mississippi River is made with flour manufactured in Kentucky's 11th-largest city? That's right; Hopkinsville KY is known as the Batter Capital of the World.

But maybe your tastes swing more toward pancakes or brownies. (Oh come on, who am I kidding? Everyone likes BISCUITS, but you know what I mean.)

If that's the case, know that Krusteaz Pancake Mix is also made in Hopkinsville. Ghirardelli's mouth-watering brownies wouldn't be possible, either, without Hoptown.

The Batter Capital of the World is also responsible for one of the finest restaurant creations known to man:

I could eat five right now.

It all comes down to wheat...and a lot of it. Hopkinsville churns out more than three million bushels of wheat annually, and without it, the aforementioned companies would be unable to create signature products.

So, all us biscuit, pancake, and brownie lovers would be justified in making an annual pilgrimage to Hopkinsville. I mean, come on, wouldn't you literally "go the extra mile" for good biscuits, pancakes, and brownies?
