Want to Become a Beekeeper? Attend These Beginner Classes in Daviess County

Growing up, I have special memories of visiting family in Grayson County, KY.  My uncle kept a few hives of bees and one of my favorite things to do was to help him "steal" the honey. I remember being really nervous as I listened closely to follow his directions. I had no idea what I was doing, and of course, had a healthy fear of being stung.

I spoke to some lifelong Master Beekeepers at the Clarkson Honeyfest to told me that when it comes to beekeeping, as long as you know what you are doing, the risk of stings is fairly low since they really only come at you aggressively when they feel threatened. With the right gear and training, you will only reap sweet rewards.

In the month of February, the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Office is hosting two opportunities for anyone wanting to learn more about the art of successful beekeeping.  Certified Master Beekeeper, Steve Hahus recommends attending both sessions if you are thinking of starting a hive or if you are in your first years of practicing.

Some of the topics discussed will be the components of a hive including how to assemble one and the best location for the hive on your property. Learn how to acquire your bees and properly feed, inspect, and care for them. Another item on the list I thought was very interesting, recognizing a queenless colony. I didn't even know there was such a thing.

Classes will be held at the Daviess County Cooperative Extension Office located behind the Owensboro Community College at 4800A New Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY 42303. Thursday, February 22nd from 6:30- 8:00 PM and Saturday, February 24th, 9:00 -10:30 AM.  All are welcome to attend. There will be a $3 registration fee at the door and you can register by emailing hshahus@aol.com or calling 270-903-1622.
