There are so many amazing things to see and do in Tennessee, whether you're out on the town in Nashville, cheering at a UT game in Knoxville, or spending time with Mother Nature in Gatlinburg. There is no shortage of things to brag about in the Volunteer state, but there are also a few things that need improving.

Too Much Crime in Tennessee

According to the latest FBI crime data for 2023-24, two of Tennessee's major cities rank among the top 10 most dangerous in the nation. There are several factors to consider when determining how dangerous a city is, with the crime rate right there at the top of that list. U.S. News & World Report compiled the official data straight from the FBI and released a list of the 25 most dangerous cities in America, which unfortunately includes two from Tennessee.

Based on the metro areas’ murder and property crime rates per 100,000 people, determined by FBI crime reports, these are the most dangerous places to live in the United States.

The data shows that MEMPHIS has the highest crime rate in America, and it's really not even close when compared to the national average. Does that make it the most dangerous city in the country? Many think so. Unfortunately, Memphis can usually be found at or near the top of a lot of "worst" types of lists.

Tennessee doesn't stop there, though, the folks in CHATANOOGA may not want to hear that their city is ranked #6 on the list of most dangerous cities.

To be fair, the crime rate (and the subsequent rankings) is just one aspect of life in these cities. There are a lot of great things about Memphis - it's the home of the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, it's the home of Graceland, and without it, we never would have gotten "Walking in Memphis" from Marc Cohn.
