AQUEDUCT

Make the Moment takes Aqueduct feature

NEW YORK (AP) — Make the Moment rallied to beat Atlantic's Smile by a neck Thursday, giving trainer Charlton Baker a 1-2 finish in the $69,000 allowance feature for older fillies and mares at Aqueduct.

Atlantic's Smile, the 1-2 favorite, set the pace and looked the winner for most of the race. Make the Moment, sent off at 5-1, had a more adventurous trip.

The trailer turning for home, Make the Moment and jockey Taylor Rice angled wide at the top of the stretch before diving into opening along the rail.

The 5-year-old swung wide again in the final strides, getting up for her sixth win in 26 starts. The time was 1:13.97 for six furlongs on the fast track.

Make the Moment paid $13.60, $3.80 and $2.40. Atlantic's Smile returned $2.20 and $2.10, and Misszippityslewda paid $2.40.

OBIT-MICHAEL GRAVES

Postmodern architect Graves, who had Target goods line, dies

PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) — An architect who designed modern and whimsical postmodern structures and later household goods sold at Target stores has died in New Jersey. Michael Graves was 80 years old.

Spokeswoman Michelle DiLello says Graves died of natural causes Thursday in his longtime hometown of Princeton.

Graves was born in Indianapolis. He designed buildings including The Portland Building in Portland, Oregon, and The Humana Building, in Louisville, Kentucky. He also did a campus master plan for Rice University in Houston and designed the scaffolding that surrounded the Washington Monument during a restoration project.

His buildings often had a sense of whimsy. At 1 Port Center in Camden, New Jersey, he used yellow and blue to liven up an office building.

Graves has had branded lines of housewares including teapots and colanders for sale at Target and JCPenney stores since 1999.

SEC COMMISSIONER-SANKEY

SEC picks Greg Sankey to replace Mike Slive as commissioner

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Greg Sankey will replace the retiring Mike Slive as commissioner of the Southeastern Conference.

Vanderbilt Chancellor Nick Zeppos, the president of the SEC presidents and chancellors, announced Sankey's appointment on Thursday. Slive, the SEC's commissioner since 2002, said in October he would retire effective July 31.

Sankey is in his 13th year with the SEC and has served as the conference's executive associate commissioner and chief operating officer for the league office since 2012. Before joining the SEC staff, Sankey was the Southland Conference commissioner for nearly seven years.

Arkansas Chancellor David Gearhart headed the search committee that decided on Slive's replacement. Gearhart said in a release, "Greg possesses all of the traits we were searching for in the next commissioner of the SEC."

BOURBON THEFT

Bamboozled: 5 barrels of stolen bourbon found in backyard

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Another iconic bourbon brand in Kentucky has been targeted in a heist, but this time authorities say they have arrested a suspect caught with the stash of whiskey in his backyard.

Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton said Thursday his deputies recovered five barrels filled with bourbon. He says the barrels were taken from the Wild Turkey Distillery in nearby Lawrenceburg.

The sheriff said one arrest has been made in the ongoing investigation.

Melton said each barrel is valued between $3,700 and $6,000, but Wild Turkey officials took samples to determine the exact worth. He said labels on each barrel had been spray painted.

He can't yet say if the heist is connected with the unsolved 2013 theft of Pappy Van Winkle bourbon and rye whiskey. That hard-to-get whiskey was taken from the Buffalo Trace Distillery at Frankfort.

TOBACCO-LEGAL AGE

Report: Raising legal age for tobacco would save lives

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A federal report says raising the legal age to buy tobacco products to higher than 18 would likely prevent premature death for hundreds of thousands of people.

The report issued Thursday by the Institute of Medicine was commissioned by the Food and Drug Administration and mandated by a 2009 law that gave it authority to regulate tobacco.

The law set the federal minimum age at 18. Congress would have to act to raise it nationally.

Most states currently have set the age at 18. Four set the age at 19 and several localities, including New York City, have raised the minimum to 21.

The report looks at the impact of increasing the age to 19, 21 or 25, but it does not make any recommendations.

ALEXANDRIA, Ky. (AP) — The Judicial Conduct Commission says it will hold a hearing over allegations of misconduct involving a northern Kentucky judge.

The Kentucky Enquirer reports the accusations against Campbell District Judge Gregory T. Popovich were made public on Wednesday.

In a written notice to Popovich, the commission said he "engaged in misconduct in office" last August while addressing Assistant County Attorney Cameron J. Blau, who was running against him for the judicial seat. The commission says he accused Blau of assisting the defense attorney improperly and made derogatory comments about him.

Popovich's attorney, Stephen Ryan, denied that his client engaged in any kind of misconduct. He said in a response filed Tuesday that Popovich looks forward to defending himself against the allegations.

A hearing date hasn't been set.
