Police: 2 dead, 1 injured in I-40 wreck

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Police in Tennessee say two people have died and a third one has been taken to a hospital after being struck by a car on Interstate 40 near Cedar Bluff.

WATE-TV in Knoxville reported that the wreck happened at about 10:10 a.m. Sunday when three people were standing on the shoulder of the westbound lanes and a car struck them.

Investigators were still trying to determine why the two cars were stopped on the shoulder. They were also trying to determine why the third vehicle veered out of control and struck the cars and pedestrians on the shoulder.

The passenger was briefly trapped in the crashed vehicle. The driver and passenger of the third vehicle were taken to UT Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

FIRE INVESTIGATION

Officials investigating blaze at vacant building

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Officials in Nashville are investigating a fire that destroyed a vacant building in Antioch.

WSMV-TV in Nashville reported that crews were called to the building early Sunday morning and remained there for several hours to douse hot spots.

Officials say the buildings had been vacant for several years and did not have electricity at the time.

The Fire Marshal is working to determine what sparked the flames.

No one was injured in the fire.

MILLIGAN COLLEGE-RESTRUCTURING

Milligan College to restructure academic offerings

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (AP) — Milligan College is planning the first total restructuring of its academic offerings in five decades and will shrink nine areas of learning into five schools of study.

President Bill Greer told the Johnson City Press the shift by the Christian liberal arts college will make programs of study more nimble.

The change up is the first total overhaul since an accreditation effort in 1959.

With the creation of the new schools, Milligan can introduce new majors in engineering and physician's assistance, both of which have been proposed to the school's governing board.

INFANT KILLED

Attorneys: Deal in works over infant death

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Attorneys involved in the case of a Fort Campbell soldier and his wife charged with murder in the death of their infant nephew say a deal in the works to resolve the case.

The Kentucky New Era reported that lawyers are trying to cut short a trial scheduled to start Monday for Christopher and Joni Leutwyler of Oak Grove. The couple is charged with beating to death their 9-month-old nephew, Jack Stark, in 2010.

Neither the Leutwyler's attorney nor the prosecutor would give details about the possible deal.

Police say the Leutwyler's were babysitting Stark while his parents were visiting relatives in Texas. The boy was unconscious when he was taken to Blanchfield Army Community Hospital at Fort Campbell and later died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

BODY IN CAR

Police find body in car after chase

WINCHESTER, Tenn. (AP) — Investigators have found a body inside a car after a police chase in southern Tennessee.

State troopers and Franklin County Sheriff's deputies found the remains after stopping the car in Estill Springs after a pursuit Saturday night.

The Sheriff's Department told WSMV-TV in Nashville the driver of the car tried to run after the stop, but was eventually caught.

During a search of the vehicle, investigators found the body inside. The remains were not immediately identified.

Police did not immediately release the name of the man taken into custody.
