Remember to Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
KY Highway Crews have placed portable message boards along US 41 near Audubon Park between Henderson and the US 41 Twin Bridges to alert motorists to deer attempting to cross the roadway in large numbers. When the Ohio River passes 40 ft. on the Evansville gauge deer are no longer able to travel along the Kentucky shoreline under the US 41 Twin Bridges approach spans. Deer are also forced out of their normal habitat in the river bottoms to the west of US 41 to seek higher ground in and around Audubon State Park. Motorists traveling US 41 should slow down and use extra caution between about the 18 and 19 mile marker. In the past, Henderson County Deputies and Henderson Police Department have had to stop traffic in this area to allow the deer to safely cross the roadway.
With additional rain the weather forecast this week, and current river level predictions, we expect deer to continue to be a hazard to motorists along US 41 at the 18 to 19 mile marker through Wednesday, February 28th, and beyond.
NOTE: KY 91 is CLOSED in Crittenden County at the 11mm where the Cave-in-Rock Ferry has had to halt operations due to rising floodwaters on the Ohio River. The current river forecast indicates the Cave-in-Rock Ferry is likely to be closed for more than a week.
