Construction has begun on the new roundabout at the Old Hartford and Fairview Drive intersection in Owensboro. It's intended to slow drivers down, reduce congestion, and make the streets safer, but with the roundabout's proximity to Daviess County High School, do you feel like this is a good thing?

You've probably heard about the new roundabout near Hillcrest Golf Course in Daviess County. Do you travel through this area daily? It has always been a dangerous intersection. I live in a nearby neighborhood and cross through 2 to 4 times a day. I see people run through red lights and don't stop when turning right off of Fairview Drive onto Old Hartford Road. I have a lot of patience, but not at this intersection. I've been known to say a few words under my breath for disrespectful drivers! I'm anxious to see what's to come with the new roundabout. I think teenagers need to drive the roundabout at the intersection of KY 56 and KY 81 west to learn how to use it.

KTC SHARES HOW TO USE A ROUNDABOUT

Because roundabouts can be confusing when you're supposed to yield, enter, and exit the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Andrew Boyle has shared some tips to help us navigate.

SINGLE LANE ROUNDABOUT

  • Watch for the yellow “roundabout ahead” sign, then reduce your speed on approach.
  • Be on the lookout for pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Look left, and if you see traffic in the roundabout, yield.
  • When you see a break in the traffic, you can safely enter the circle.
  • Drive around the roundabout until you get to your exit.
  • Use your turn signal, watch for other cars, and exit safely.

MULTI-LANE ROUNDABOUT

  • Watch for the yellow “roundabout ahead” sign and the white “lane choice” sign.
  • Be on the lookout for pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Choose a lane before entering: Use the right lane to go right or straight. To go left, straight, or make a U-turn, use the left lane.
  • Look left, and yield to traffic already in both lanes of the roundabout.
  • When you see a break in the traffic, you can safely enter.
  • Don’t make this common mistake — trying to go left from the right lane. Change lanes before safely exiting the roundabout.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has begun construction at the intersection of Old Hartford Road and Fairview Drive/Foors Lane roundabout, so use caution when driving in the area and expect delays. I'll be practicing patience right along with you!
