Back in 2010 Bowling Green passed Owensboro for Kentucky's third largest city.  As the census says of 2010:  Bowling Green had a head count of 58,067 while Owensboro housed 57,265.  That's was a mere 802 people separating 3rd and 4th place.

Last week the Census Bureau released it's estimates from July of 2013.  Bowling Green still holding the 3rd place spot and pulling away from Owensboro.  B.G.  now with an estimated 61,488 while Owensboro holds 4th with 58,416. If you look at the size of both cities as Keith Lawrence did in Wednesday's Messenger Inquirer, we see that Bowling Green is nearly double the size of Owensboro.  B.G. has 37.78 square miles while Owensboro adopts 19.09 square miles of western Kentucky land.

Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne is checking into possibilities of annexations to boost the city's population.  He says "Bowling Green had a big annexation a few years ago.  Think what our population would be if we doubled the size of the city and annexed all those subdivisions on Kentucky 54"  Payne expects Owensboro's population will take a big step between now and the next official Census count in 2020.
