It was not my intent to throw a monkey wrench into your New Year's resolution, but that's what this might look like.

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION COUNTERATTACK--BUT NOT REALLY

I consulted a number of polls conducted nationwide, and "losing weight" comes out at the top of most of them. And if I dug deeper, I'd probably find that, historically, that resolution--or maybe quitting smoking--would be number one.

To get an idea of what folks in the tri-state have in mind when the topic of "bakeries" comes up, I did a preliminary survey and found what I would call usual suspects. But there were also a number of bakeries I'd never heard of, which is great. Learning about new bakeries is NEVER a bad thing.

WHO REMEMBERS DIXIE CREAM DONUTS?

In that "preliminary round," we had favorites from Owensboro and we had favorites from Muhlenberg County. Those are the ones I recognized. And then there was one that didn't make the cut, and I wouldn't have expected it because it's been closed, at least around here, for DECADES.

Oh, the memories. The Owensboro Dixie Cream was on the east side of Frederica Street in a strip mall. And it feels like there was another one, but I don't remember where it would have been.

It IS good to see that there are still Dixie Cream locations...I guess; that image is from 2010. But when you search Dixie Cream, you DO get a website. So I'll go with the glass half full on this one. And, of course, that glass would have milk in it. We ARE talking donuts after all.

THE BEST BAKERIES IN THE TRI-STATE...GO

But more broadly, we're talking about BAKERIES. And I count donut shops as bakeries for the purposes of this poll. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
