Getting back to our Preacher Curls, here is the exercise that preachers and everyone else should be doing to stay Healthy and Fit!

Preacher curls are an arm isolation exercise traditionally performed with the use of a "preacher bench," which has a designated pad where the arm is positioned for the exercise. Most people who want to do an effective biceps workout usually do not have or need this kind of specialized equipment. As with most exercises, alternative equipment can be substituted for the preacher curl exercise. These include an exercise ball and dumbbells.

Exercise Technique
To perform preacher curls using a ball and dumbbells, begin by kneeling behind the ball on the floor. Hold a dumbbell in your right hand and tuck the ball in closely against your body. Place your right arm across the top of the ball. Adjust your body as needed so that your arm angles downward and your right armpit is pressed into the ball. Extend your right arm across the ball so that your palm and inner arm face the ceiling. Place your left hand under your right arm for additional support or to stabilize the ball. Exhale and bend your right elbow to lift the dumbbell toward your shoulder. Pause at the top of the movement and then inhale as you slowly return to the starting position. Complete 8-16 repetitions and then repeat the exercise with your left arm.

Workout Tips

Do preacher curls in addition to other exercises that target the major muscle groups of the body. Perform two to three sets of preacher curls, with eight to 16 reps in each set, on three nonconsecutive days of the week. If developing large biceps is one of your fitness goals, include other exercises for the biceps in your workout routine. Some effective choices include curls, concentration curls, hammer curls, barbell curls and reverse curls. Balance all of the biceps work with triceps exercises to prevent muscle imbalances, which can lead to injury.
