I'm on a big yearbook kick, right now, I guess. I came across my senior pictures which led me to share my discovery of how you can find old yearbooks if they're missing.

And, then, taking a look at my senior picture, it all came back to me.

First, my freshman year in high school was the only year in which students were able to sign other students' yearbooks. We would get them toward the end of the year and it was quite a ritual.

But beginning with my sophomore year, we had to go pick them up during the summertime because they were no longer ready to go by school year's end, effectively bringing to a close the whole signing tradition. (Granted, I've been out of high school a LONG time, so that all may have returned; I wouldn't know.)

Something else, yearbook-related, that happened in the summertime...senior pictures.

To get our senior pictures taken, we had to go out to the school--Daviess County High School, in my case--in July or maybe early August. That was fine.

And since they were SENIOR pictures, everyone dressed nicely.

But here's the thing...the air conditioning was not turned on. Now, I don't know if that's a common thing to do during the summer when school isn't in session. It WOULD seem like a pretty steep expense to keep a large building cool for three months while it was empty. And, you know, turn it on in time if there WAS a summertime event and the school was needed.

But that last part hadn't happened on senior picture day and it was probably 85 degrees or more in that building.

Consequently, everyone in my senior class had really GLOWING faces for their pictures.

THEY: Look at that glow. You must have really been excited about your senior year.

ME: Uh, yeah, no.Yes, I was. No, that had nothing to do with it.

As for those GLASSES...well, that's a story for another day. Or not.
