The month of December is without a doubt the busiest month of the year for Santa Claus. He has lists to check not once but twice (he has to make sure he doesn't miss anything), he has to make sure all the gifts get on the sleigh, and he needs to make sure the reindeer are ready to go. That's all before he flies around the world to deliver all those toys over the course of one night. On top of all that, he gets letters from boys and girls across the planet telling him how good they've been over the past year and what they'd like him to deliver them on Christmas. It's a massive undertaking that I can't even imagine. But, Jolly Ol' St. Nick is smart enough to know he can't do it all by himself, so he's teamed up with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to ask if you could lend a hand.

U.S. Postal Service: Operation Santa

I imagine Santa gets more mail than anyone else in the world, especially this time of year, and even with all his Christmas magic, answering every single one is impossible. So, through his partnership with the USPS, he recruits "volunteer Santas" to answer some of those letters for him.

To volunteer, visit the USPS Operation Santa website and create a free account. Then, once you've been verified, browse through the letters available and pick one or more to respond to as Santa. Many of the letters will likely involve the child asking for a specific gift which you are more than welcome to purchase and ship to them through a participating post office location by December 19th if you're comfortable doing so.

How to Send a Letter to Santa

If your child would like to write Santa a letter to let him know exactly what they want for Christmas or to just say how big of a fan they are of him, Put the finished letter in a sealed envelope with your return address in the upper left-hand corner and send it to the following address:

123 Elf Road
North Pole, 88888

The USPS acknowledges that Santa has a ton of letters to get to and offers the following suggestions for helping make his job easier:

  • Write legibly
  • Include your full name and address in the letter
  • List the gifts you want in order of preferences
  • Be specific about the gifts you’re asking for
  • Don’t ask for gifts that might be too expensive

You could also send your letter to the Santa Claus, Indiana post office at the address:

Santa Claus
PO Box 1
Santa Claus, IN 47579

Of course, the earlier you get them there, the better your chances will be of getting a response from one of Santa's elves or from Santa himself.
