Whitesville Elementary School is hosting a family volleyball tournament from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 9, in the school gymnasium. WES is located at 9656 Kentucky 54.

Forty-two WES students are members of a school volleyball club and will be participating in the event, which also features six adult teams from the school and community. Teams include a group of fathers called “We Showed Up”; a team of WES teachers and Principal Cindy Appleby, “Teachers’ Team Extreme”; a group of employees from the Kroger store on U.S. 60 called the “Kroger Krushers”; and many more.

Whitesville is one of four DCPS elementary schools that has adopted “The Leader in Me” program to build leadership skills in students. The program is based on Stephen R. Covey’s “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.” One of those habits is “Sharpening the Saw,” which emphasizes the value of participating in enjoyable activities to recharge mind, body and spirit.

The “Sharpen Your Saw Spikefest Family Tournament” invited teams to register for competition in the single-elimination tournament. The winning student team and the winning adult team will compete in the final match. Concessions will be available throughout the day and lunch will also be available.

The entire community is invited to attend and cheer on their favorite teams. Our media partners are also encouraged to attend and share coverage of this unique event with our community.
