It's safe to say that Sir Beef was a very popular restaurant in this area. And, that it's still talked about and missed after all of these years. I moved from Northern Michigan to Owensboro in the fall of 1994 and met my husband in late 1996. When we would take "date trips" to Evansville over the next several years, I would always be excited to eat at new places. But, that rarely EVER happened. Sir Beef was always on the menu, and we would always pick up food for his parents too. I'm not saying that I disliked Sir Beef, but it would have been nice to try some other restaurants! Ever since the restaurant closed years ago, it's all that I hear about in my friend group. I GET it. Sir Beef is missed and you want it to come back soon. My husband wants it to come back soon too!
Remember the "Help Ye Self" relish bar? On ChowHound.com a Sir Beef fan asked about the iconic green bean recipe, and got this response. "My husband Jon Fink owned Sir Beef for over 20 years. After his passing, I found some of the Beefs recipes. This is what I found for the green beans. You can break it down accordingly. Hope this helps." It does indeed. I wish there were more Sir Beef recipes out there to enjoy. Thank you to Linda and the family for sharing this recipe!
4 cans of beans
4 onions
1 cup sugar
1 cup vinegar
1 cup salad oil
6 1/2 tbsp basil
4 tbsp oregano
3 1/2 tbsp celery seed
2 1/2 tbsp garlic
1 tsp salt
If you miss the taste of their iconic seasonings and sauce, it's been said that Lion's Choice restaurants in the Midwest serve up a sandwich that comes close. Riverbend in Evansville has been rumored to also have a similar tasting sandwich. When they come back to the Fall Fest, I'll have to try it to compare.
Another rumor is that a Sir Beef may be opening up in the old Wendy's location on the west side of Evansville. It may be wishful thinking, but can you imagine? Let's sign a Sir Beef petition to open one up soon!
You can even order a piece of nostalgia, and honor your favorite restaurant!
