Way back in 1980 I was the Chairman of the Big Rivers Chapter of the American Red Cross. Much was different then, AIDS was just beginning to be discussed, The Red Cross Organization was doing great work and ANNIE was the CPR training dummie, weighing in at around 30+ pounds.

That was when I took my first CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) class.

Next I became an instructor for the Red Cross teaching the program. My biggest reward came when a small child was pinned after an accident. One of the students that took my class was the first on the scene. She administered CPR to the child saving his life.  It doesn't get any better than that.

Between career and family duties my CPR training days dwindled down to zero. Others came behind me and continued the program. It seems to have happened so quickly that I didnt even notice it had been more than 12 years since I was involved.  Boy do things change. I let my certification lapse.

On May 24 several of us from WOMI/WBKR gathered in the conference room after 5pm to become certified in CPR. I didn't think there would be room for everyone to practice and learn the procedure. But again being a married man, I should have known I was wrong.

Today's CPR program is easier, faster and more productive. The Annie has been replaced by easy to use and carry head/torso mannequins. The breath to compression ratio is different and you no longer have to worry about breaking the sternum. Instructor Neal Bradley was professional and understanding in trying to teach this old dog new tricks.  In a matter of 3-4 hours the entire class knew the material and had mastered to art of CPR. I was impressed.

Today I received my CPR Certification Card. We now have several people in the building who can and will perform CPR if the need arises. As I get a bit older this is important to me. It is also important that I keep my certification current. I am determined to never let it lapse again.
