Barton Distillery May Be Fined for Massive Bourbon Barrel Spill [VIDEO]
Bourbon lovers, not only in Kentucky, yelled a collective "NOOOO!" when the warehouse at Barton 1792 Distillery collapsed on Friday. It's not only a loss of one of the state's most precious wares, it may also incur a series of fines.
The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet has stated it plans to cite Barton for the collapse which caused bourbon to leak into a nearby creek and kill hundreds of fish. They will, in other words, be fined for "not reporting the incident in a timely manner and polluting the waterways of the commonwealth".
Cabinet spokesman John Mura said the fines could be up to $25,000 a day, per incident.
At least 9,000 barrels spilled out from the decades-old warehouse structure.
Meanwhile, Barton reps said it could takes weeks before a full assessment of the damage and the cause of the collapse has not yet been determined.
Approximately 800 fish were killed after the initial incident.
