Last Thursday, Owensboro's Independence Day fireworks show was cancelled due to the threat of rain. The Messenger Inquirer reported that, "Mayor Ron Payne said, the fireworks display has been postponed until either New Year's Eve or in conjunction with the grand opening of the new Owensboro Convention Center, whenever that happens."

Well, that has brought out the Facebook community.

  • Amanda Rusher Its very unpatriotic & embarrassing to I'm know I live in a city that did not celebrate our country's birth!! Its a slap in the face to our active military, veterans, & all who have gave their lives for us to be able to set off those 4th of july firew...
  • Michael Bowlds I think it's pretty lousy but it's par for the course for our city officials. If it's done at new years, that's a new years celebration. Same goes for the convention center. That's a celebration of the opening of the convention center. I guess our disrespectful city officials aren't as proud of our independence as the rest of America that DID set off fireworks to celebrate
  • Bryant Murphy It's just wrong in every way. Who do they think is gonna stand out there in the freezing weather and drag their kids out in it as well.
  • Brooke Lawrence I think it's disrespectful in every way. There's a whole different meaning to 4th of July celebration. It's a wonderful way to celebrate the birth our country. The city of Owensboro spent millions upon millions renovating downtown. They call the fireworks off at 8:30am. Which in itself is ridiculous. They could have rescheduled them the day after or even the day after that. But now we should take what was meant for a special occasion and redirect it to let's say the opening of the convention center. The city should invest money into education or to help those less fortunate in our community. Rather than focus on "the next big thing". But I guess we better quit complaining before they remove Santa from the mall at Christmas or the Easter bunny at Easter.
  • Denise Mahoney Williams Seriously, drag the family out to becomes popsicles just to watch a 20 minute fireworks. That's ridiculous!!!!! Congrats mayor on another asinine idea!
  • Chris Payne What a joke. My family won't be going. The fireworks are for celebrating our country's birthday. Nothing else. Why in the world did they cancel the show at 9am that morning anyway. Sheesh
  • Ashley Wells Thompson I don't know why when fireworks have to be canceled they don't try to do a celebration on Labor Day weekend and do the fireworks then. At least it still a patriotic holiday for the people of America and a long weekend for most. Who the heck wants to watch fireworks on New Years??? Stupid.
  • Holly Jenkins Jackson I think someone must be baking some "funny brownies" for the city official meetings....because only someone high as a kite would think that a firework show is a good idea in the middle of winter!
  • Carla Smith It shows that their are some confused and indecisive people running in the offices in Owensboro. I mean wow you have them then don't and the radar was fine that day. Then back on then back off then now New Years wow. I say boot them out of office an get some real decision makers in there. If its this bad over fireworks thank goodness it wasn't a disaster.
  • Crystal Embry It's a freaking rip-off! They can drop all that money for the riverfront, but not for two fireworks shows for the tax-paying voters!!! I hope the city boycotts the convention center opening and shows the mayor how unacceptable this is. How embarrassing would that be for him to not have his city standing with him for that!?!?
  • Brad Wimsatt What a joke is right. Once again a politician puts his own agenda before the people's. No surprise there. I know I won't be going to see them.
  • Judy Patton It's all about our wonderful mayor , what a joke!!!!
  • Glenna Glasgow Sigler Why have them at all! They are call 4th of July for a reason to celebrating our country independence for a reason! Nothing makes sense in this town!
  • Lydia Meredith It won't be 4th fireworks.....
  • Jonlyn Marie Allender Blake It should be done now, our fireworks aren't meant for the opening of anything or new years, it is wrong to make us wait
  • Alex Martin I just wish they would have been up front with us. My little ones had to miss the fireworks. Not to mention I look like a liar to them. We as the people should have known this in advance so that we could have made other fourth of July plans.
  • Tamara Lillpop They are probably broke due to the new riverfront and bridge. What a joke!!! These small towns surrounding owensboro managed to do theirs with no problems.
  • Alexandra Faught Bivins And Owensboro how about you wait till later in the day to cancel the fireworks instead of 8:00 in the morning.
  • Alexandra Faught Bivins I think it's silly to wait to do them. I think at this point they should just hold on to them for next year's 4th of July and have an even bigger and better display. Who celebrates the opening on a convention center with fireworks? However, fireworks on January 1st would be kinda cool.
  • Stacey Gibson Clark Just doesn't make sense to wait. I mean its the Birthday of our country's independance!! This is stupid to wait!!!!!!

Would you like to join in the fun?
