Fifth-grade students at Highland Elementary School will “go for the gold” this week with a creative Olympic game activity.

In honor of the Olympic games taking place in London, and to represent Highland’s back-to-school theme, “All Things Patriotic,” each group of fifth-graders will receive a bag of mystery items with which to “create” an Olympic event. Students will use the “Productive Thinking and Planning” talent, which is part of the Talents Unlimited curriculum, to invent a game using the equipment provided in their bags.

The project will culminate with a competition from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday, Aug. 10, on the front lawn of Highland Elementary School, 2909 Kentucky 54.

Staff members in charge of the event are Sally Tingle, Erin McCormick, Jamie Tipmore, Amy Lowe and Chantay Taylor.

HES Principal Leslie Peveler trained teachers this summer in Talents Unlimited. “This activity is a perfect example of the type of creative and critical thinking skills students need to use to be prepared for their future,” Peveler said. “Problem solving, planning, working as a team, and utilizing appropriate resources are all important skills for our 21st century students to have.  I can’t wait to see the competition and maybe join in the fun!”
