Kentucky Photographer’s Photos of Red River Gorge are so Dazzling You Won’t Believe He’s an Amateur
Tom Mosher recently took a trip to the gorge for a day full of hiking and leaf peeping. The photos he took along the way are proof enough that Red River Gorge should be the number one Kentuckian fall destination.
While our minds are hyper-focused on the holidays, a good trek through some scenic countryside might help melt away the stress of the season. Read ahead for my interview with the photographer with an eye for great shots.
Are you a professional photographer?
Tom: No, but I try to take the best photos I can when I hike. All the pics I have posted were either taken with my smartphone or a still taken from a GoPro video.
What are some hiking trails you recommend for novice and experienced hikers at the Gorge?
Tom: A great place to start is the Auxier Ridge to Double Arch loop. At just over six miles, it's approachable for new hikers, while the views and landmarks are enough to keep any experienced hiker interested. Plus, there are several unofficial spur trails off of the forest service road that complete this loop if one wants to extend the mileage and see more incredible sights.
Is the foliage in that region at its peak for the season?
Tom: We're now well past peak for the season. Most of the leaves are on the ground, and the reds are gone. But the Red River Gorge is still a beautiful place to hike in the winter!
Any tips on how to find these scenic spots?
Tom: I use a combination of YouTube, Facebook Groups, AllTrails, and Google to plan hikes and backpacking trips. Facebook Groups - I'm in several, some dedicated to specific areas, some for hiking or backpacking in general, and some that are more focused on photography. AllTrails helps with route planning. Sometimes, someone on YouTube will show the hike. There's no shortage of information.
What are your favorite nature-made formations such as arches?
Tom: I love it all! Expansive overlooks, getting up close to interesting geological features like rock walls and arches, and dynamic water. There's also nothing wrong with a quiet walk in the woods.
