Owensboro Elementary Students Bring Home Hilariously Random Amazon Finds
Parents of students at several Owensboro elementary schools have been surprised with special gifts over the past couple of weeks as their kiddos participated in Amazon Donation Day.
A collaboration with 4 Good Community and DOTS distribution store provided students with the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of products either brand new or that had been returned to Amazon. Things like home decor, kitchen appliances, clothing accessories, and sooooo much more. In fact, the assortment was so random, it was actually hilarious.
The permission slip sent home said, "We believe that everyone should have access to pursue a generous heart - as we believe it is just as special to give as to receive! Amazon Donation Day allows students to pick everyday household items that they believe would benefit their family or friends in some way."
My son, Rollins, is a 4th grader at Sutton and he may have had unrealistic expectations going into it. When I picked him up, he was struggling with a big cardboard box. When I asked what was in it, he dramatically said "Not an air fryer!!" I guess that's what he had been looking for? He was super excited about what he found though! A couple of garage door opener remotes and a really nice laptop tray so I can work in comfy spots.
Then he told me that a friend of his snagged a sweet set of BAGPIPES! I had to pull over! I was laughing so hard I couldn't see! So, when we got home, I asked my friends with other kids who participated in Amazon Donation Day what they brought home. Here are some of the scores of the day:
First, we HAVE to start with Harrison's cowboy boots. What a GOLDEN find.
A Portable Collapsible Toilet. This could REALLY save you in a pinch!
Rain is NO MATCH for sweet Sutton second-grader, Theo! He brought home not one, but TWO huge clear umbrellas.
Bellybutton Cleaner. Nuff said.
10ft Tall Inflatable Halloween Decorations
Soccer star, Max, is both offense and defense with his epic Sword and Shield set.
An LED Bubble Machine! Throw a rave anywhere you go. SO handy.
My friend, Brittany, got a call from the school on Amazon Donation Day that she needed to go pick up her son's gift for her. It is a sharp object and he couldn't take it on the bus. Come to find out it was an industrial meat slicer. Sandwiches are on the menu daily in their household now!
Cash, a fourth grader, has a new baby brother, so he got an extra diaper pail to save his family's noses. So thoughtful and practical.
Here is my friend Laci modeling the not creepy at all light therapy mask her daughter Ayla got her. She also snagged an awesome yoga mat. We love a gal who appreciates self-care!
Sets of pots and pans, toasters, electric griddles, juicers, rugs, boxes of Yeezy hoodies, record players, cat trees, oil-filled radiators, water filtration systems, bread makers, human-sized hampster balls, a hood scoop for a Lamborghini (had to google what that was) and the list goes on and on. I love that there was such a mix of actually useful items and gadgets of pure comedy gold.
Brian Benjamin with Owensboro Public Schools shared, "It's been incredible really. The kids actually are taking it in the intended way and being really thoughtful about what they can get for their family." It isn't just the students who have been enriched by this experience, "And it is the most fun I have seen educators have at school maybe ever," he continued.
I don't know about y'all, but the negativity and stress in this world can be overwhelming some days. I can't even imagine how young people must feel. We could all use more thoughtfulness and light-hearted fun, for sure, and this was such a creative and resourceful way to spread joy to our community. From a mama who received a pair of garage door opener remotes today and a whole lotta laughs, thank you to everyone involved in making this happen.
