NASCAR released a statement earlier this afternoon announcing that Confederate Flags will be banned from races, tracks and all other of its events and properties.

The announcement comes after severe backlash from displaying the flag and after one of their own drivers, Bubba Wallace, the only black driver in the Cup Series spoke out against displaying the Confederate Flag as well. He will even be driving a car with a special paint scheme to honor the Black Lives Matter movement at Wednesday night's race at Martinsville.

NASCAR said in their announcement "the presence of the confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans."

This announcement officially distances NASCAR a symbol of slavery and racism from many that had been a familiar sight at stock car events for more than 70 years. Of course it also comes in a time where protests are happening around the world for civil rights following the death of George Floyd.
