OMU plans Arbor Day tree planting blitz and seedling give-away

Each year in celebration of Arbor Day and as a reminder of the utility’s dedication to Owensboro’s urban forest, OMU hosts the planting of a tree in our community.

This year, OMU is planning a “tree planting blitz”, placing trees in each of the city of Owensboro’s 12 neighborhood alliances. These trees will be planted in public spaces throughout our community, according to local and state ordinances, safety requirements and within the appropriate distance of overhead power lines.

In addition, OMU will provide seedlings to customers visiting the Customer Service Center at 2070 Tamarack Road during the week of April 18 – 21.

In 2010, OMU provided and planted a tree at Tamarack Elementary School. In the past, the utility has placed trees in local parks and at its Customer Service Center in honor of the efforts of OMU employees in the Ice Storm of 2009.

OMU’s tree trimming practices and planting programs have earned the utility the Tree Line USA Utility honor bestowed by the Arbor Day Foundation for the past seven years. For many of those years, OMU was the only utility in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to earn this honor, but has been recently joined by Bowling Green Municipal Utility.

Information regarding the safe planting of trees in relation to powerlines, as well as, details of the utility’s Tree for a Tree certificate program can be located here.
