"'Tis the season" as they say. But, how soon should we jump into the Christmas spirit? It's a debate that's been raging for years. Some people like to shift into Christmas mode the moment the clock strikes midnight on November 1st. Others wait a week or two after the Halloween candy sugar coma subsides. While there are those who want Christmas to know its role and wait its turn until after Thanksgiving.

Is there such a thing as putting up your Christmas decorations too soon? What about Christmas shopping? At my house, we keep our decorations pretty limited. We have our tree and a few things we put on the mantle above the fireplace, and that's about it. Nothing outside. The fewer things we put up, the fewer we have to take down once Christmas is over. As for the timing, we generally put it up the Thanksgiving weekend or sometime that following week for no particular reason other than it just "feels" like the time to do it.

Shopping is a different story. While we should start before Thanksgiving weekend (way before, if I'm being honest), that usually doesn't happen until after either.

Do I have a problem with someone putting their Christmas decorations up before Thanksgiving? I'll first answer that question with another question, "why would I?" Lord knows the past nearly two years have not been easy for most of us, so if putting your decorations up a week or more before you dig into that Thanksgiving bird makes you happy, go crazy. It has zero impact on my life or how I go about my business.

Leslie, your thoughts?

[LESLIE] The holiday season makes me happy. The smells, lights, snow, food, everything. Do I put up my decorations before Thanksgiving? Sometimes, I do. It depends on how I'm feeling. If I need things to start looking like Christmas early, then I start decorating. Oh, I start gradually, don't want to throw my family into shock. I guess for me, the bigger picture is when do I HAVE to take it down? Once all the decorations are up, I really have a hard time putting them away for a year. So, I leave, at least the lights tress and winter snowmen up until Spring. It's about five or six months of Christmas Winter at my house. Ho, ho, ho! It's ok, go ahead, start decking your halls!
